Surgery to reshapen nose is one of the most common procedures done in field of plastic surgery. Rhinoplasty can improve either the appearance of your nose or severe obstruction in airway or both. Either way even a subtle alteration in a person’s nose can change the appearance of their entire face. Rhinoplasty (commonly called as a ‘Nose Job’) is done for variety of reasons including hump removal, straightening nose, refinement of nose tip, hanging nose correction, overall size/shape in proportion to face etc. Rhinoplasty is often performed to correct breathing problems related to nose or correct deformity caused by external trauma or accident.

Operation

Rhinoplasty is done for various reasons so technique used also varies. Usually, your surgeon makes a cut between or inside your nostrils to separate nose skin from inside cartilage or bone and modify skeleton. In more complex cases, your surgeon may also make cuts across the base of the nose. The surgeon then reshapes the inner bone and cartilage to produce a more pleasing appearance.

Rhinoplasty procedure can be performed using both local & general anesthesia & takes anywhere between 1 to 2 hours. For complex cases, more time would be needed. The procedure is usually day care and patient can go home same day.

Result

Rhinoplasty procedure will help achieve following.

  • Desired nose shape enhancing overall facial appearance
  • Ease of breathing (if procedure is performed to improve functionality)
  • Improved confidence & self-esteem

What about scars?

Scars are inevitable part of any surgery. For Rhinoplasty, incisions are usually made inside the nose avoiding any marks on the outside. Please discuss about scars with your surgeon.

Risks/ Complications

Rhinoplasty surgery is generally a safe procedure but following potential complaints, risks and complications may occur; most of the which will subside in 2 weeks’ time. These are largely driven by one’s healing abilities.

  • ‘Bleeding, Infection, Bruising
  • Swelling & pain
  • Nausea
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Itching around wound

In rare case, as with all surgical procedures, a revision surgery may be necessary to correct minor irregularities.

Care after treatment/ surgery

Immediately following surgery, your nose is covered by a splint to hold it in its’ new shape. Some packing will usually be inside the nose which will be removed in 1-2 days from surgery. It is important to avoid overexertion during the healing period which could potentially result into troublesome bleeding. The individual can return to work within two weeks of surgery. Patients should avoid strenuous activities for 3-4 weeks. Minor irregularities along the bridge line (along the nasal bridge) may be felt after the procedure. Some swelling is usually persistent for up to 6 weeks. The final result may be evident after 6 months.

After you are discharged from hospital, you will see your surgeon in post-surgery follow up sessions during which as well, you will be given more guidance on care, activities etc. Any plastic or other surgery does not stop biological ageing process and your surgeon will recommend you ways to have effect of surgery lasted for long.

Costs

Costs for individual procedures will vary widely based on procedure & hospital chosen for surgery but usually involves following.

  • Surgeon’s fee
  • Hospital facility charges
  • Anesthesia fees
  • Medical tests & medicines

If revision surgery is needed in a rare case, your surgeon will not charge Surgeon’s fee but other costs will have to be borne by patient as applicable.
